A pacemaker is a medical device that helps regulate abnormal heart rhythms. It is surgically implanted in the patient’s chest. It sends electrical impulses to the heart to make it beat in a regular pattern. A pacemaker can also be referred to as a cardioverter-defibrillator (CVR). It consists of a small battery-powered generator and leads that are implanted into the heart. This generator transmits electrical impulses to the heart to maintain a consistent heartbeat. Pacemakers are commonly used to treat conditions such as bradycardia (slow heart rate) and heart block. Pacemakers offer various benefits to individuals with heart conditions, helping them to improve symptoms and reduce complications. However, a regular visit to a cardiologist is mandatory for proper evaluation and keeping track of your prognosis.

An ICD or Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator is somewhat similar to a pacemaker. The implantable device helps to continuously monitor the patient’s heart rhythm and generates mild shocks to restore the normal heart rhythm in case any abnormality is detected.

CRT or Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy aims at restoring the normal heart rhythm by coordinating the pacing of the upper and lower chambers of the heart. It involves the implantation of a pacemaker which is connected to the ventricles on each side of the heart. The signals are sent in a way that both the ventricles start to pump in synchronization.

More Information

There are several types of pacemakers available, to suit the specific needs of different patients.

  • Single-chamber pacemakers have one lead that is placed in either the atrium (upper chamber) or the ventricle (lower chamber) of the heart.
  • Dual-chamber pacemakers have two leads, one in the atrium and another in the ventricle.
  • Biventricular pacemakers, also known as cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices, have three leads and are used to coordinate the contractions of the left and right ventricles.

Pacemakers, ICD and CRT are recommended for individuals with certain heart conditions that can lead to bradycardia or heart block. Some of the most common of these include sick sinus syndrome, atrioventricular (AV) block, and heart failure.

Symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, fatigue, and shortness of breath may also indicate the need for a Pacemaker, ICD and CRT. A thorough evaluation by a cardiologist is necessary to determine the most appropriate treatment option.

Pacemakers, ICD and CRT offer numerous benefits for individuals with heart rhythm abnormalities.

  • Reduced symptoms: By monitoring and regulating the heart rate, these help improve symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and fainting.
  • Better cardiac life: They also reduce the risk of complications associated with bradycardia, such as stroke and heart failure.
  • Improved lifestyle: These allow individuals to resume normal activities and lead a more active lifestyle.
  • Plan future treatments: ICD allows doctors to record the abnormalities in heart rhythm, making it possible for them to use this vital information for curating a treatment plan in the future.

FAQ'S

Q1 - How long does a pacemaker last?

A - Pacemakers typically last anywhere between 5 to 15 years, depending on various factors such as the type of pacemaker, battery life, and individual patient characteristics.

Q2 - How will I know if the pacemaker battery runs out?

A - Patients with a pacemaker are required to go for routine examinations that help to keep track of the battery status.

Q3 - What is the process of replacing the pacemaker batter?

A - A pacemaker battery has a lifespan of roughly 6-7 years, and replacing the battery is far easier than having a pacemaker implanted. It is done under local anaesthesia. The pacemaker box is taken out while leaving the leads in place. It is replaced with a fresh box, and the wound is stitched up.

Q4 - What happens during pacemaker implantation surgery?

A - Pacemaker implantation is typically performed under local anaesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision near the collarbone and inserts the leads into the heart through a vein. The generator is then placed under the skin and connected to the leads. The procedure usually takes a few hours, and most patients can go home the same day or the following day.

Q5 - Can I still drive with a pacemaker?

If your pacemaker is working properly and you have no complications, driving is generally allowed. However, it is important to check with your doctor and follow all the recommended guidelines and restrictions.

Q6 - Can I undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with a pacemaker?

A - Most modern pacemakers are MRI-compatible. However, it is crucial to inform your healthcare provider about your pacemaker before undergoing an MRI to ensure safety.

Q7 - Are there any restrictions on physical activities with a pacemaker?

In general, individuals with pacemakers can engage in most physical activities, including exercise and sports. However, it is important to consult with your doctor for specific guidelines and any necessary precautions.
